I can't believe how busy July is! I'm almost looking forward to school starting just to get a regular routine down! Of course, then we'll really have to schedule ourselves which really gets in the way of fun. Right now I'm pretty much funned out!

I'm starting back to work on Monday so I'm trying to hurry and get a lot done. I'm changing the upstairs doorknobs to polished nickel rather than the lovely gold we've had. I'm looking at paint to paint the family room and wondering if I have the physical and, more importantly, mental energy to take on the project. It's the vaulted ceiling and moving the piano that dazes me.

I'm also finding a great deal of joy in my garden. Every day I go out and putter. It's amazing that just a few weeks ago we planted a few seeds and now we have this amazing piece of ground in our backyard that is covered in plants! We've been eating wax beans and yellow squash. We've been shelling peas and eating them as snacks. I'm watching the tomatoes get bigger but not any redder. I'm tying them to poles and encouraging them to turn red. I'm delighted to see the size of the pumpkins. I am discouraged to see how the pumpkin plants are taking over the garden. Today I pulled up a mutant spaghetti squash plant. The boys and I had a good time cutting open one of the mutant vegetables. It was a cross between a zucchini and spaghetti squash. Strange since the other two plants came from the same seed package and are producing spaghetti.

While I was pulling up the mutant plant, the dog got out of her dog run and came at us at about 20 mph. She didn't slow at all as she ran right into my three year old. She still kept going. Poor kid. He was emotionally damaged, I'm sure. I only treated the scratch on his leg, though. The emotional scars will come up on a therapist's couch someday.

My oldest went to Girls Camp this morning. I really miss her and the family dynamics have changed. The kids are all bored. I really count on her to entertain. Today Papa came over and I asked him to take the middle two and a cousin to his house. The three year old heard me and raised his hand and yelled, "Me! I go to Papa's!" Every time I tried to redirect him, he started talking about going to Papa's house again. It was hysterical.

  1. It sounds like your garden is doing a little better than mine. I expected an overabundance of zucchini since we planted three plants but none of them are doing anything. The yellow squash isn't much better.
We have beautiful big tomato plants with lots of green tomatoes but like you...I'm checking them every day and urging them to turn my favorite color.
Our basil is doing well and so until my tomatoes ripen, I just have to enjoy the fresh basil with store-bought tomatoes.

I think I will be happy when September comes. It has been a long summer full of too much work and not enough fun!

The Most Dreaded Words

Everybody knows that Christmas is about keeping the Santa Secret and pleasing your children. Therefore, the most dreaded words are uttered on Christmas Eve. "I changed my mind, I want a [pony, scooter, bike, Red Rider BB gun]" A close second place winner is, "Can I have a New Year's Eve party?" Then, "Me, too?"

Too Sick to be Sick

I am sick.  Really and truly sick.  I even took a sick day and felt no guilt whatsoever that maybe I wasn't sick enough to have a "sick day."  Because I am.  My 5 year old was sick, too so I took him to the doctor.  I refuse to acknowledge that I'm sick because I don't get sick.  So with absolute glee, my little boy climbed up onto the table, stuck out his tongue and conversed with the doctor.  I heard something about cloudy ears and antibiotics and then I just turned it off. It hurts when sound reaches my eardrums. We drove back home, I turned on the television, brought in the dog, and let the babysitting begin.  I crawled back into bed and swam somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness.  The kids came home from school.  I might have acknowledged them.  I made chicken noodle soup from scratch.  I couldn't even think.  My husband caught me in a sway and asked what he could do.  I grunted some terse instructi...

What We Eat

Check out the good looking crew.  Just to clarify.  I'm the pretty one. There's a little mountain resort in Northern Utah that is invaded every July by this group of people. We are an intimidating bunch. 5 years ago my brother brought his Nepalese bride to the United States.  She lived in a country where she had no expectation to ever drive a car.  She bought her food daily from the market and ate it.  She taught English, although her accent was so strong when she arrived I questioned her grasp of the language.  We tried to be friendly and accepting.  We ended up scaring the daylights out of her. She thought we were crazy.  Her words, not mine. Although I think she tolerated me a little better than the others because I had the brand new fair-haired baby that she continued to steal.  She wanted a blond haired, blue eyed baby and wondered what her chances were now that she married an American. We take turns cooking for the family dinners. ...
