The Mommy Filter

We changed satellite providers so we can watch BYU football games. Now we find out it doesn't carry the channel with most of the Jazz games but that's another diatribe for another time. With the new subscription we get three months of HBO free. First thing we did was block all movies that were rated R. Next we looked through the guide and found movies we hadn't seen and wanted to see, had seen and wanted to see again, or had seen and thought the kids would like, too. I'm saving The Brady Bunch Movie for a night I can't sleep. Not appropriate for kids but very, very funny to people over the age of 40.

I DVRed (that's a real word) Back to the Future believing my children would benefit from such an iconic cultural experience. Particularly when I offered that movie as an option and my 13 year old asked what it was about. Seriously. We all sat down to enjoy a classic movie. It is a very different experience when seeing it through the Mommy Filter. I had no idea it had so much swearing in it. I didn't remember it that way but I heard every single swear word and gasped out loud which punctuated the swearing to my children, I'm certain. So I deleted it from DVR.

This story does have a happy ending, however. I have seen two movies that have passed through the Mommy Filter with minimal concern. "August Rush" is an amazing movie that is very well done. I did have some concerns about a few scenes but overall it passes.

Tonight we saw "Bedtime Stories." Passed the filter with flying colors. I may be slightly biased because there is a scene where the children run into their mother's arms. My three year old followed suit and jumped into my arms and announced that I'm that mom. Although slightly related but mostly I am recording this so I don't forget it, when I was tucking him into his bed I said something about his bed being snuggly and warm. He replied, "Mom, you make my bed snuggly and warm." Could I ask for anything more than I already have? I think not.

  2. I too saw Bedtime Stories this week! My mommy filter was pleasantly surprised. Even after reading all the positive family-based reviews, I had a hard time believing Adam Sandler could squeeze through the filter. But he did! I'm sure he'll be very pleased when he reads our blogs.

Braces!

13 year old got braces today! She also had a little helper on her.

I am being published!

I know! It just reeks of excitement, doesn't it?  I know what you are thinking. "Who would publish that woman's thoughts?" The answer is a lovely little outfit called www.blog2print.com. In other words, I haven't been discovered. I am no closer to being a published author than I was yesterday EXCEPT that by Christmas I will be the proud owner of my very own blog book! I know. It's a little anticlimactic but here's the cool part. My friend, Becki, found me entertaining and directed me to a blog called www.josikilpack.blogspot.com.  She posted a little coupon code for 20% off which was supposed to end last week. Apparently, the code is still good and I saved $14. That said, you know it isn't exactly the cheapest way to get published but it's the best price I could find on publishing my blog!  And it requires very little technical know-how.  And that, my friends, tickles my heart. And, for a small price of your integrity and dignity, I will share the ...

Wordful Wednesday and Clever Much? Rarely!

Sometimes my brilliance blinds me! Speaking of brilliance, before we continue this discussion, if you are my mother in law, stop reading. Walk away. At least until after Christmas. Seriously. My own mother doesn't read my blog. I think it has something to do with words like "socially awkward" and "mortifying." She knows me. She doesn't have to read about me. She can just pretend like I turned out normal. Anyway, if the mother-in-law has exited the website, check out what she's getting for Christmas! TADA! I'd like to give a special shout out to the internet and whatever site I was cruising through last week for planting this idea into my head. Usually not this creative and I definitely don't know where I got the energy to take the kids out for pictures. Or go to Walmart for the frame. And Robert's for the mat. Costco for the pictures.  Yeah, I painted the frame, too. So not my style. Anymore. I also ordered a canvas print for my husband but I...
