Magic

Saturdays are special days. It's the day we catch up from the rest of the week. With the wonderful onset of spring we now have the added chores of working outside which I LOVE! Not so much in the summer heat but in the early mornings (which I don't love) and dusk. True, I am mosquito bait but there is something rejuvenating about gardening and moving dirt.

When I say moving dirt, I mean that I borrow the truck, drive to the dirt place, buy it, haul it home, get out the wheelbarrow and shovel and go inside to do the dishes, drive up to the canyon to pick up my oldest daughter and, when I get home, the truck is miraculously empty and my grow boxes have new dirt! It's like magic!

Meanwhile, magic is occurring inside the house nearly all the time. If I go to the grocery store and I'm gone 20 minutes, I come home to a kitchen in shambles. When I take a shower, I come out and find toys strewn throughout the house like Hansel and Gretel path and find children at the end of it. I won't mention names but the guilty are ages 4 and 11, for the most part.

Sometimes the magic is so quick, it can happen right before my eyes. I can finish cleaning the family room and, while putting dishes in the dishwasher, I will look up to see a brand new fort in the family room, complete with five blankets, 8 pillows, saltine crackers, popcorn, and chocolate milk.

Then there is the quiet magic that happens about this time every night. The soft ticking of the clock, the regular breaths of sleeping children, the hum of the refrigerator. Quiet and peaceful. There is peace in the house and my heart is full.

Magic.

  1. I am finding a theme in my readings this morning. We must all be experiencing the same thing. I have tried to tell my husband a million time that the house was clean before he got here. I could have my house sparkling and within ablonk between the twins and the dog...it's over before I can enjoy it. Oh well, one of the joys of motherhood I suppose.

WV:gentlex...the name of the RX I'm going to create to give my children so they will be more "gentle" on my house.

  2. Ah, but when they are asleep and you look at those beautiful faces, and realize those sweet God given creatures are your angels, the frustrated thoughts somehow magically disappear too.

Braces!

13 year old got braces today! She also had a little helper on her.

They Call Me Grace

I was nearly 8 years old when my baby sister was born. This was quite fortunate since I was well adept at reading. I was tired of my name. Nancy. So plain. The Sunday comics included a comic strip called Nancy. She hung out with her stupid little boyfriend named Russell, was very boring and cried all the time. Why would parents who love their child name her such a boring name? I assumed they had run out of originality by this point. I was, after all, their third child. There was Mike, then Suzy, after me they had Joey (short for Joanne) and finally Jene Marie. The "j" a soft French slur. It was fitting. We had a French surname. But clearly Jene Marie was their crowning glory. Do I hate for taking all the love from my parents and hogging it for herself? Of course not. She's my sister. She's my baby sister. But if I happen to feel the need to speak to her when she's at work, I always ask for her by using both names; Jene Marie (with the schwa). I don't want her...

I am being published!

I know! It just reeks of excitement, doesn't it?  I know what you are thinking. "Who would publish that woman's thoughts?" The answer is a lovely little outfit called www.blog2print.com. In other words, I haven't been discovered. I am no closer to being a published author than I was yesterday EXCEPT that by Christmas I will be the proud owner of my very own blog book! I know. It's a little anticlimactic but here's the cool part. My friend, Becki, found me entertaining and directed me to a blog called www.josikilpack.blogspot.com.  She posted a little coupon code for 20% off which was supposed to end last week. Apparently, the code is still good and I saved $14. That said, you know it isn't exactly the cheapest way to get published but it's the best price I could find on publishing my blog!  And it requires very little technical know-how.  And that, my friends, tickles my heart. And, for a small price of your integrity and dignity, I will share the ...
