Dignified Vasovagal Response

I'm a fainter. It's undignified but have a strong vasovagal response. It tends to kick in suddenly and without much encouragement on my part.

My first episode occurred at the age of 23. I was coaching a church basketball game and Gina Poulsen made a beautiful lay-up. I jumped to my feet and screamed something intelligible, I'm sure. Then I felt it coming on. I sat down, turned to one of my players, told her I was passing out, and put my head between my knees because that's what I've always been told to do. For the record, that's an asinine thing to do.

I fainted. I hit my head on the hardwood and got myself a concussion which exacerbated the episode since I was already surrounded by highly emotionally charged teenage girls. I was OUT. The paramedics were called, the game came to a stand still where the girls, in tears and hysterics (both teams - teenage girls, remember?) united to pray for the coach who was clearly in the throes of death.

Meanwhile, my sister was on the team and not in hysterics. She was highly embarrassed and was rolling her eyes. My mother, who was also coaching, watched as her favorite daughter passed out cold. The ambulance arrived, I was loaded in, regained consciousness in the ambulance just enough to recognize the paramedic and throw up all over him and my shirt which had to be removed. I had to spend the night in the hospital doing stupid tests that determined that I fainted and got a concussion.

It was an extremely mortifying experience.

The next episode occurred a year later when I was invited to go waterskiing with a bunch of guys. Already knowing I was the best waterskier and feeling way to cocky, I refused the second ski. I severely underestimated the crap-factor of the ski and the boat. The boot was of poor quality and my foot kept slipping around. I used all my energy reserves to stand up to ski. The world went black and I let go of the rope. Face down in the water for about 15 seconds. By the time the boat came around, I was conscious and feeling incredibly nauseous. HOWEVER, I toughed it out because I was with three guys and I could never admit weakness. Noooo! I spent the next two and half hours trying really hard to not feed the fish (read: throw up).

By this time I basically had the drill down. I felt the episode coming on and I needed to get right down on the ground. It rarely occurred but when it did, I would dive for the linoleum, grass, carpet, asphalt, whatever was beneath my feet. Since then, I've only truly gone unconscious one time. So stupid that it's not worth mentioning.

My diagnosis actually came with my last pap smear, embarrassing as it sounds. My doctor took a biopsy of my cervix and helped me sit up. I suddenly got very sick to my stomach and wondered if I was going to faint. The nurse noticed my pallor and pushed me back down while the doctor joked about my vasovagal response. Not feeling the love but at least I knew what I had.

Today I proudly picked some beautiful produce for my masterpiece salad. It was going to be like a party in the mouth. As I busily sliced up a pepper I felt resistance and pain. I'd just cut my finger with a dull knife. Blood gushed and I started with the tunnel vision and nauseous feeling. Mr. Taylor was close by so he only looked slightly amused as I dove for the hardwood. After carefully examining my wound, he announced I needed stitches. I refused. One vasovagal response in a 24 hour period time is enough. I will check it tomorrow.

  1. Hey Nancy! I thought of you tonight when our little guy fell and tore his frenulum right at betime. Not too much blood, but many tears.

You'll have to update us on the need for stitches. I love that you figured out so quickly that hitting the ground on purpose is better than a fall. I don't think I would've thought of that. I generally only pass out with blood draws, so I've always been already seated, thankfully!

Update us on stiches or no! Good luck!

  2. My mother had this same response as does my great friend DiAnna. Freaks me out because I am NOT a fainter. When my dad died and we were packing up his clothes, we found those little ammonia vials in every single jacket pocket. He had dozens of them. Do I need to say here that he was a lifetime Scouter who personified the slogan, "Be Prepared?" Maybe I could find some of those for Mr. Taylor.

  3. As a sister in Vasovagal Response, I too hit the deck really fast when I feel it coming on...Luckily I passed it to my daughter who had her first one walking around ASU with her future husband (not that he know this is his fate.)

We have to stick together (on the floor)

  4. The first time this happened to me, I was in a Dr's office. The nurse told me I needed to have my heart checked and "worst case scenario a pacemaker put in". Nice, right? Fortunately my dad's a Dr and told me that nurse was looney otherwise I would have thought I was banned from ever using my heart again :P

  5. Oh poor you, yikes I can't even imagine...but boy did I get a visual of all the hyper emotional teenage girls with the first episode, your writing is very good even if your vasag..whatever..response isn't!
I hope you don't need stitches today, take care!

  6. I am my mother's favorite daughter too! So nice to be in this club isn't it? ;)

And that is a horrible thing to be prone too! After my whole fainting incident in the doctor's office, I conclude that I NEVER want that to happen again!

  7. I feel your pain. I, too, have been known to pass out over stupid things, like when my sister put hot rollers in my hair when I was nine. Hope your finger is ok.

  8. You really shouldn't be typing with that raw stump. Super bad for the keyboard.

  9. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has vasovagal responses. I too have learned when it is coming on and immediately lay down.

  10. That is exactly as I remember it! And I believe that I am the favorite daughter.

  11. Everything about horse betting

Horse racing's traditions give it unique flavor and character, but to be successful, it must be willing to evolve to catch up to the present and to meet the future. We most certainly hope that it does.

In the United Kingdom, there are races that involve obstacles (either hurdles or fences) called National Hunt racing and those that are unobstructed races over a given distance (flat racing). The UK has provided many of the sport's greatest ever jockeys, most notably Gordon Richards.

Will Barbaro be the next Triple Crown winner? He has the breeding and the talent, but as of this writing twenty horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown only to fail at Belmont. Twenty five more have won two of the three races, but maybe this year...

Now that Ah Day has passed on the Preakness, eight other horses will be looking to spoil Barbaro's bid for the second leg of the Triple Crown. Two are returning from their Derby bids and six more that skipped the Run for the Roses.

  12. Even worse, the final was to be held at the Bernabeu Stadium this year. real madrid official website With this victory, Real Madrid is focusing on their next match against Osasuna, which will be held on May 2nd. During their last match on January 3rd, neither of the two could obtain the victory; the game ended 0-0. Now, this game will be key for both squads; the Whites would be closer to surpassing Barça to obtain the La Liga title, which they haven’t won in two seasons. On the other hand, Osasuna, which tied their last game against Athletic Bilbao, are trying to add a triumph and surpass Espanyol in the 11th place of the standings. If Osasuna end in 11th or 10th place this season, it will be the best position they have achieve in four seasons.

At the end of the game, Kaka expressed his satisfaction at his team’s performance, happy to have helped his team by adding a point. karim benzema The Villareal players were unhappy with the decision but unable to do anything. The game continued, and they had several opportunities from Giuseppe Rossi and Santi Cazorla, but both shots were saved by Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

How To Be A Dedicated Neurotic

Going through old files from graduate school, I found an invaluable pamphlet. Be a Dedicated Neurotic Remember the Past. . . and Regret it. Abhor the Present. Dread the Future. 1. Become preoccupied with the body, and make a long list of symptoms. Make them sound very clinical and professional... 2. BLAME your boss, your spouse, your partner, your neighbor, your kid. THEY are responsible for your miseries. 3. Feel trapped. You couldn't possibly declare your own independence without hurting someone's feelings. 4. Overeat. Rationalize and eat! Eat an insulated wall around yourself. Diet for a few days and say it doesn't work for you. 5. Self-pity. No matter what, feel sorry for yourself. Agonize over things about which no one cares. 6. Don't ever try. That way nobody can really accuse you of failure. You can always say, "But I could have done it." 7. Stress how shy you are. Insist that the world must come to you. You're special. 8. Your agg...

Pioneer Trek

Utah was founded by the Mormon pioneers in 1847 after enduring unimaginable losses and seeking a place of peace. July 24th marks the anniversary that the first wagon trains arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Their numbers were greatly diminished by crossing the country in wagons and handcarts, dying of scurvy, tuberculous, malaria, starvation, unidentified fevers, and freezing to death. This, they found preferable to facing the extermination order put forth by Governor Boggs of Missouri. I believe this is the most courageous act of faith - to leave all they had that was familiar and travel the rough terrain in the unknown in search of a place where they could worship in peace. My daughters left this morning for a small re-creation of what the pioneers experienced. I don't love the idea since I know so many of the pioneers died but it is a way for many of the youth to connect to their ancestors and understand what many of the early members endured for their faith. The youth were asked...

Flu

The flu has been making its way through our family.  The first to be hit was the 15 year old.  She was very, very angry.  At me.  She had been begging for the flu shot for the past three months.  I kept forgetting.  She got better but it's one more thing to discuss on her future therapist's couch. Today I picked up my 5 year old from school.  He told me about making valentine's for his friends and how he gave his valentine to his best friend, Chase.  Chase is the little boy who grabbed my scarf on my way to my car today, looked at me earnestly and yelled his telephone number to me so fast I couldn't process it then ran away. "Today I felt so sick." "Why didn't you call me to pick you up?" "I told Teacher but she didn't call you." "What did you say?" "I told her my head hurt and I felt dizzy." "What did she say?" "She told me I wasn't sick." I took mental note to talk to his teacher about c...
