Totem Pole Ranking

I'm a good sister.  I have my faults like wishing my sister a happy birthday via facebook and making her pick up my son from school on her birthday then skipping her party, but I'm still an overall good sister. Have you not read about her running skills right here on this blog?  Yes, yes you have.  Because I'm supportive like that.  Just not supportive enough to show up to celebrate her birthday.

Speaking of her birthday, she is a younger sister, born to a rather old mother.  My mother was 37 when she had Jene.  Darn near ancient.  Embarrassed the crud out Jene who swore she would never do that.  I'd be offended since I had my last baby at the ripe old age of 39, but I figure we're pretty much even since I gave her a facebook birthday wish and called it good.

One nice thing my sister and I have in common is our youngest boys who love to play with each other.  This comes in handy when one or the other works.

Speaking of work, we also share a common career choice.  We're both high school counselors.  In fact, we work at sister schools.  I work with high school age students while she concentrates on the adult side across the street.  One of her aides is married to one my aides, Abby.  Today Abby announced that she met sister yesterday when she went to see her husband.

"She's so cute!  I can't believe she ran a half a marathon pregnant!"

Clunk.  That's the sound of my jaw hitting the desk.  "She's what?"

"Oh my gosh!  Maybe I wasn't supposed to tell you.  Act surprised when she tells you!"  I assured her I would.  But I was lying.  I ran to call her.

I played the social niceties game to give her a chance to tell me.

"So, how are you?"

"Good, but tired."

Waiting, waiting.

"Besides being tired, are you feeling okay?"

"Mostly."

Waiting, waiting.

"Uh, anything else you want to tell me?"

"Abby talked, didn't she."

37 years I've known this girl and she tells a virtual stranger before me.  Again, I'd be offended except that the irony is not lost on me.

Like my mother, she's having a baby at the age of 37.

Old hag.

(My sister, not my mother).

  2. Come on, once someone utters "I'll never" do something, do you think they'll readily admit it when they do it?

Especially when they have an older sister who remembers it all?

Congrats to her, and congrats on being an aunt once again.

If nothing else, this story teaches us that you never say never.

I was 38 when I had The Boy, so I guess I was an old hag mother, too...and my daughters were 19 and almost 17, so I think that makes me crazy in addition to being an old hag.

  3. HA HA HA HA HA! Only sisters could write posts like this and both crack up over the irony :)

(Get this - my sis found out she was pregnant from a spare pregnancy test I was about to throw away... because I'd already peed on 3 and they were all positive. We were due 4 days apart and I teased her like mad).

Happiest Birthday and Congrats to your sis!

  8. WHAT? You can't wish an immediate family member their only birthday wish on Facebook? Can you Twitter it? Good grief, there are just too many rules with this social networking.

Loved the post. Congrats to all!

The Most Dreaded Words

Everybody knows that Christmas is about keeping the Santa Secret and pleasing your children. Therefore, the most dreaded words are uttered on Christmas Eve. "I changed my mind, I want a [pony, scooter, bike, Red Rider BB gun]" A close second place winner is, "Can I have a New Year's Eve party?" Then, "Me, too?"

Too Sick to be Sick

I am sick.  Really and truly sick.  I even took a sick day and felt no guilt whatsoever that maybe I wasn't sick enough to have a "sick day."  Because I am.  My 5 year old was sick, too so I took him to the doctor.  I refuse to acknowledge that I'm sick because I don't get sick.  So with absolute glee, my little boy climbed up onto the table, stuck out his tongue and conversed with the doctor.  I heard something about cloudy ears and antibiotics and then I just turned it off. It hurts when sound reaches my eardrums. We drove back home, I turned on the television, brought in the dog, and let the babysitting begin.  I crawled back into bed and swam somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness.  The kids came home from school.  I might have acknowledged them.  I made chicken noodle soup from scratch.  I couldn't even think.  My husband caught me in a sway and asked what he could do.  I grunted some terse instructi...

What We Eat

Check out the good looking crew.  Just to clarify.  I'm the pretty one. There's a little mountain resort in Northern Utah that is invaded every July by this group of people. We are an intimidating bunch. 5 years ago my brother brought his Nepalese bride to the United States.  She lived in a country where she had no expectation to ever drive a car.  She bought her food daily from the market and ate it.  She taught English, although her accent was so strong when she arrived I questioned her grasp of the language.  We tried to be friendly and accepting.  We ended up scaring the daylights out of her. She thought we were crazy.  Her words, not mine. Although I think she tolerated me a little better than the others because I had the brand new fair-haired baby that she continued to steal.  She wanted a blond haired, blue eyed baby and wondered what her chances were now that she married an American. We take turns cooking for the family dinners. ...
