Harry Potter, Scooby Doo and Cupcakes with Sprinkles

First I stayed up too late reading. When I finally headed towards my bed, I stopped at my 11 year old son's room and manhandled him to stand up and gave him a gentle shove toward the bathroom. I'd even turned the light on for him.

Looked for 6 year old for a last potty break. I found him in my bed. He'd soaked his clothes, my sheet, mattress pad and my blankets. Thanks, Buddy. I went about the business of stripping him in the dark and standing him over the toilet to finish the job. The job was pretty darn near finished. Redressed him for bed and went in search of his brother who was completely M.I.A. He'd gotten lost on the way to the bathroom. He does this often. He'd wandered around the house sleepwalking until he either wakes up or finds a soft place to lay back down. I found him in his brother's room on the bed. Mandhandled him up again and guided him to the bathroom. Stood there so he didn't wander off again. He found his bed when he was finished.

My sleeping spot was wet. Still in the dark, I untucked the sheet and mattress pad. The bed was dry. Husband is still asleep so I rolled up the wet bedding to the middle of the bed and went in search of a dry blanket.  In the dark.

Found a blanket, double checked on the boys. Two of them were snoring. I envied them.

Scott got up at 5:00 a.m. Six year old had returned the scene of the crime and was curled around my head, his head resting on top of mine. 7:05 a.m. found the six year old wide awake, sharing every single thought that crossed through his mind. Something about Harry Potter, Scooby Doo, a great big snake, and cupcakes with sprinkles.

And that, my dear, is why I have dark circles under my eyes.

  1. THen before you know it, you'll wake up one day with just your hubby around and miss the pee smell. Just a teensy bit

  2. Is that why? I thought mine were genetic. Guess it's due to the 15 times I got up last night (okay, I'm exaggerating, it was only 5 times)

  3. Wednesday in line at Lagoon there was a really cute, young looking mom with a tall, lovely daughter. I almost asked her "Do you have a blog? Are you A-musing mother?" But I refrained. I hope it wasn't you. Because I'd be sad if I missed the chance to tell you in person how much I enjoy your blog!

  4. Oh, and you won't miss the pee smell. Really. You won't.

  5. You may well be too pure to watch Jay Leno, but I love when he does headlines and classifieds and stuff. He has had a couple of ads for "mattress. . .like new. . .slight urine smell." So, the good news is that KSL can be your best friend in a couple of years.

Here is another way we are alike. We just stopped this midnight routine a couple of years ago. It will pass. I promise. But now I have two big boy dogs who sneak up on the bed. When you get lonely, you can borrow them!

The Most Dreaded Words

Everybody knows that Christmas is about keeping the Santa Secret and pleasing your children. Therefore, the most dreaded words are uttered on Christmas Eve. "I changed my mind, I want a [pony, scooter, bike, Red Rider BB gun]" A close second place winner is, "Can I have a New Year's Eve party?" Then, "Me, too?"

Too Sick to be Sick

I am sick.  Really and truly sick.  I even took a sick day and felt no guilt whatsoever that maybe I wasn't sick enough to have a "sick day."  Because I am.  My 5 year old was sick, too so I took him to the doctor.  I refuse to acknowledge that I'm sick because I don't get sick.  So with absolute glee, my little boy climbed up onto the table, stuck out his tongue and conversed with the doctor.  I heard something about cloudy ears and antibiotics and then I just turned it off. It hurts when sound reaches my eardrums. We drove back home, I turned on the television, brought in the dog, and let the babysitting begin.  I crawled back into bed and swam somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness.  The kids came home from school.  I might have acknowledged them.  I made chicken noodle soup from scratch.  I couldn't even think.  My husband caught me in a sway and asked what he could do.  I grunted some terse instructi...

What We Eat

Check out the good looking crew.  Just to clarify.  I'm the pretty one. There's a little mountain resort in Northern Utah that is invaded every July by this group of people. We are an intimidating bunch. 5 years ago my brother brought his Nepalese bride to the United States.  She lived in a country where she had no expectation to ever drive a car.  She bought her food daily from the market and ate it.  She taught English, although her accent was so strong when she arrived I questioned her grasp of the language.  We tried to be friendly and accepting.  We ended up scaring the daylights out of her. She thought we were crazy.  Her words, not mine. Although I think she tolerated me a little better than the others because I had the brand new fair-haired baby that she continued to steal.  She wanted a blond haired, blue eyed baby and wondered what her chances were now that she married an American. We take turns cooking for the family dinners. ...
