Google and Squirrels

I have a love/hate relationship with the internet. This media mode has trickled into every aspect of my life. I want to pay bills,I go to the computer. I want to know the weather for next Tuesday, I check the computer. I want to look at skirts at Dillards, I check the computer. I want to find out the definition of ubiquitous simply because the sound of the word as it rolls off my tongue is complicated yet fascinating, I'm back on the computer.

But that's what the internet is, you see. Ubiquitous.

I can open a window and find a recipe, carry this little netbook into the kitchen, start cooking and I'm opening other windows to shop for shoes or skirts while sautéing mushrooms.

This completely changes the definition of multitasking. Think about it. Back in the day, multitasking meant taking a copy of the Reader's Digest with you to the bathroom.

I hold Google personally responsible for my attention deficit disorder. I demand instant gratification. If the words don't pop out to me, I won't click on them. With any whim, I can whip open the computer and type in a phrase. BAM! That's what I was looking for! The words to Boston's "More Than a Feeling" because I just HAD to know right now and oh-my-golly now I'm feeling like I just need to hear some Boston so I run right over to playlist.com and search my favorite Boston songs and add them to my playlist. Speaking of Boston, I wonder when the marathon is and I'm off on some random tangent that I'd never pursue without the internet because I don't run marathons and why would I suddenly need to know when it is except now I'm thinking about my sister who ran the Red Rock Relay and I want to check someone from her team who adopted triplets so I'll just mosey on over to her blog.

I am so afflicted by "Up's" Dug and his propensity to stop midsentence and yell, "SQUIRREL!"

My laundry still needs to be folded. My kids still want to eat.

Speaking of which, I am completely amazed that my 4 year old played "Secret Agent" for FOUR HOURS last week. He was single minded. I was not so perfect. He obviously hasn't discovered Google or Sesame Street.

But I never have to remember anything. It's right at my fingertips. My dendrites have to learn new neuro pathways. Some of my important skills set are becoming obsolete; penmanship, memory, prose - who needs them? I don't need to know the Dewy Decimal system. I don't have to sing the alphabet song in my head while looking for a telephone number in the telephone book. I can join a book club and read "War and Peace" in 30 minutes on Spark Notes.

I've got Google.

SQUIRREL!

Comments

  1. I totally agree with this. It is impossible for me to just look up one thing - my brain goes off into many tangents, and I waste loads of time (and sometimes forget what I was looking for initially). The Internet has also taken away my patience - even the microwave is too slow for me now!

And now that I have a laptop? I can avoid domestic duties in EVERY ROOM (though I doubt I'd ever take it into the bathroom).

  2. Ouch, your right. I haven't sung the alphabet in my head for a long, long time.

  4. I still count with my fingers. Does that count?

  5. LOL... I just asked a friend yesterday, what she would do if we lost the internet. Between hysterical sobs, we concurred that our bills would go unpaid, we'd sing the wrong lyrics every time, we wouldn't know when our high-school friends were complaining about Jillian Michaels via Facebook, and we would run out of ideas for Christmas presents.

I feel better considering my laptop as a very smart member of our family who never leaves the toilet seat up or sasses back.

Thanks for the outright laughter your post inspired!

  6. And for the very reasons you stated above is why I LOVE the internet. More specifically, Google. And by the way- Bing sucks.

  7. It is so true. It's like a separate brain at our fingertips.

  8. The 2 days I was without the internet when we were changing service, our house was clean, the laundry done, and I did the cooking myself. However, I was singing all of the wrong words to Poker Face so, obviously it wasn't worth it.

Also I like the internets because it introduced me to my friend Nancy.

  9. I know! I absolutely LOVE the friends I've made! That's a completely separate post!

I'm starting to think that BlogHer is like a Star Trek convention only with women.

  10. I think we need like a special handshake or something...

  11. I have Google ADD too! Every time we are unsure of something in our house I go straight to the computer to look it up!

  12. I just spit on the palm of my hand and I'm holding it out for that handshake.

  13. Yup... and your husband helps by commenting that if I would just get of the computer, I would have so much time to do all the things I need to do ...... err .... that would be on the computer right?

Oh hang on ... wait ... that's me. I'm projecting.

  14. I don't know what I would do without the computer or my regular dose of laughter that I get from reading your witty rambling!

I was asked to present an award to two bloggers I like and you are one of them. Not sure of the protocol of how it all works but if you go to my blog you can read about it there!

  15. Thanks for reminding me that I can get distracted by a different squirrel and go to another link before I'm finished with the first. Soooooo..... how did your blog end? There's a marathon in Newport Oregon.....Apricot wine on the dock....no more crab cocktail stand.

  16. So true! I'm trying to cut back. Really I am.

How To Be A Dedicated Neurotic

Going through old files from graduate school, I found an invaluable pamphlet. Be a Dedicated Neurotic Remember the Past. . . and Regret it. Abhor the Present. Dread the Future. 1. Become preoccupied with the body, and make a long list of symptoms. Make them sound very clinical and professional... 2. BLAME your boss, your spouse, your partner, your neighbor, your kid. THEY are responsible for your miseries. 3. Feel trapped. You couldn't possibly declare your own independence without hurting someone's feelings. 4. Overeat. Rationalize and eat! Eat an insulated wall around yourself. Diet for a few days and say it doesn't work for you. 5. Self-pity. No matter what, feel sorry for yourself. Agonize over things about which no one cares. 6. Don't ever try. That way nobody can really accuse you of failure. You can always say, "But I could have done it." 7. Stress how shy you are. Insist that the world must come to you. You're special. 8. Your agg...

Pioneer Trek

Utah was founded by the Mormon pioneers in 1847 after enduring unimaginable losses and seeking a place of peace. July 24th marks the anniversary that the first wagon trains arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Their numbers were greatly diminished by crossing the country in wagons and handcarts, dying of scurvy, tuberculous, malaria, starvation, unidentified fevers, and freezing to death. This, they found preferable to facing the extermination order put forth by Governor Boggs of Missouri. I believe this is the most courageous act of faith - to leave all they had that was familiar and travel the rough terrain in the unknown in search of a place where they could worship in peace. My daughters left this morning for a small re-creation of what the pioneers experienced. I don't love the idea since I know so many of the pioneers died but it is a way for many of the youth to connect to their ancestors and understand what many of the early members endured for their faith. The youth were asked...

Public Notice

Dear friends, neighbors, enemies, and people I don't know: Understand that it all started out very innocently. I planned my garden carefully. Everything had a place and plenty of room. Within my planning, I included three spaghetti squash plants, two yellow squash and two zucchini. Out of the 7 plants, two came up and they weren't my beloved spaghetti squash. This year we have added two grow boxes to the south side of the house. One of which we brought in a garden mix of soil and I planted neat little rows of seeds. The other was left untouched. All I saw was dirt. So I started pushing squash seeds into it. I don't even know what kind they are. When they came up, I transplanted them so they would have room to grow. I also noticed I had two squash plants (pumpkins, perhaps?) growing in the main garden that I hadn't planted. Apparently, I had also dropped a seed in the dirt outside the grow boxes and it's coming up as a squash plant, too. Last count, I hav...
