Never Get in a Strange Boy's Car

This week I am participating in Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop. I chose a prompt and then took literary liberties.
Writer's Prompt: Describe the first date you went on in a boy’s car.

I wondered if I still had a boyfriend.  I mean, I'd been dating him for about 10 months but I kind of went M.I.A. the past two.  I'd just come home from an adventure out of the country and he hadn't called.  I lamented the state of my love life to an acquaintance, Scott.  He had the perfect guy for me.  Of course he did.  Everybody did.  More often than not, it was a charity case.  Worse, I was the charity case and the guy wasn't any winner which hurt my ego. I was 25 years old, single, and becoming a menace to society.

"What's wrong with him," I demanded.

"Nothing."  Pause.  "He's going into social work."  I could think of worse things.

He called me a couple of days later.  We talked, had a good conversation and he asked to take me out to dinner.  I wondered if I still had that boyfriend so agreed to lunch, instead.  He wondered what time to pick me up.  I told him I'd meet him there.  I'd had my share of stalkers.  I was not going to tell him where I lived and I was not going to get in the car with him.

We met at a Mongolian Barbecue place.  We had a good time.  I liked what I saw.  I liked how I felt.  Still no word from the proverbial boyfriend so I asked my date out for the following night.  Just in case he was an axe murderer, though, I told him I'd meet him again.  No need to to come pick me up.

The next night my date was determined to find out where I lived.  Sounded like a stalker to me.  He finally charmed me with the line, "Let's just say that I have an extra $5 and I wanted to drop it off at your house."  Fine.  I told him my address.  There were no google maps, GPS, or anything to help him.  He'd never find it.  It was out in the country with a county address.

The next day I found an envelope with a $5 bill inside.  Was I creeped out?  Was I flattered?

A few days later, we went on a picnic in the mountains.  I let him drive.  We came back to my house and were hanging out when the boyfriend called.  I guess I did still have a boyfriend.  I put him off and returned to my date.  I walked him out to his car and came clean.  "I have a boyfriend," I announced.  And so he kissed me.  I tried again.  "He just called me."  He kissed me again.

Nineteen years have passed since that week.  He still knows my address.

  1. But does he still leave $5 in an envelope for ya?

19 years...quite a persistent stalker, isn't he? He might be worth keeping around.

The Most Dreaded Words

Everybody knows that Christmas is about keeping the Santa Secret and pleasing your children. Therefore, the most dreaded words are uttered on Christmas Eve. "I changed my mind, I want a [pony, scooter, bike, Red Rider BB gun]" A close second place winner is, "Can I have a New Year's Eve party?" Then, "Me, too?"

Too Sick to be Sick

I am sick.  Really and truly sick.  I even took a sick day and felt no guilt whatsoever that maybe I wasn't sick enough to have a "sick day."  Because I am.  My 5 year old was sick, too so I took him to the doctor.  I refuse to acknowledge that I'm sick because I don't get sick.  So with absolute glee, my little boy climbed up onto the table, stuck out his tongue and conversed with the doctor.  I heard something about cloudy ears and antibiotics and then I just turned it off. It hurts when sound reaches my eardrums. We drove back home, I turned on the television, brought in the dog, and let the babysitting begin.  I crawled back into bed and swam somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness.  The kids came home from school.  I might have acknowledged them.  I made chicken noodle soup from scratch.  I couldn't even think.  My husband caught me in a sway and asked what he could do.  I grunted some terse instructi...

What We Eat

Check out the good looking crew.  Just to clarify.  I'm the pretty one. There's a little mountain resort in Northern Utah that is invaded every July by this group of people. We are an intimidating bunch. 5 years ago my brother brought his Nepalese bride to the United States.  She lived in a country where she had no expectation to ever drive a car.  She bought her food daily from the market and ate it.  She taught English, although her accent was so strong when she arrived I questioned her grasp of the language.  We tried to be friendly and accepting.  We ended up scaring the daylights out of her. She thought we were crazy.  Her words, not mine. Although I think she tolerated me a little better than the others because I had the brand new fair-haired baby that she continued to steal.  She wanted a blond haired, blue eyed baby and wondered what her chances were now that she married an American. We take turns cooking for the family dinners. ...
